Our 7-Step Kitchen Remodeling Process
Transforming your kitchen is an exciting journey. Here are our seven stages to streamline the kitchen remodeling process.
During a consultation, we’ll take measurements and discuss renovation goals. This is also a good time to share kitchen design ideas and your inspiration. Shortly after, you’ll receive a work estimate.
To increase functionality, the layout of your kitchen may need to change. In this stage, you’ll need to consider cabinetry, adding a kitchen island, any new kitchen appliances, and additional storage space. Once the new floor plan had been finalized, we’ll pull the work permits.
A list of supplies and materials will be configured and ordered.
Existing appliances, fixtures, tiles, and other elements of the kitchen will be removed. With every remodel project, Caron Home Remodeling provides a 15-yard dumpster to safely discard old materials.
If necessary, any plumbing, electrical, and HVAC systems will be roughed-in.
New materials and fixtures such as flooring, subway tiles, custom cabinets, kitchen islands, countertops, a sink and open shelving are installed.
To conclude your kitchen remodel any permitted work will be signed-off on by an inspector, ensuring everything is safe and up to code.
Frequently Asked Questions
The cost of a kitchen remodel can vary widely based on factors such as the size of the kitchen, the extent of renovations, quality of materials, labor costs, and geographic location. On average, a basic kitchen remodel can range from $10,000 to $25,000. This might include minor cosmetic updates like painting, refinishing cabinets, and replacing appliances or countertops.
Midrange Remodel: A mid-range kitchen remodel, which might involve replacing the existing cabinets, countertops, appliances, and adding new flooring, typically costs between $25,000 to $50,000.
High-end Kitchen Remodels: For a high-end kitchen remodel with custom cabinetry, new appliances, high-quality materials, and intricate design features, costs can exceed $50,000 and reach well into the six-figure range.
Additional expenses to consider include permits, design fees, demolition, disposal of old materials, and unexpected issues that may arise during the kitchen renovation process. We recommend budgeting an extra 10%-20% of the total project cost to cover unforeseen expenses.
Ultimately, the cost of a kitchen remodel depends on your specific needs, preferences, and budget. Consulting with several general contractors and obtaining detailed quotes based on your requirements can help you determine the most accurate estimate for your project.
Studies suggest that a kitchen remodel typically yields a return on investment (ROI) of around 70% to 80%. For example, if the renovation costs $50,000, it could potentially increase the home’s value by $35,000 to $40,000. However, the ROI can vary based on the scope of the remodel and the level of upgrades.
Buyers often prioritize kitchens when evaluating homes, viewing them as central gathering spaces and focal points of daily living. A modern, functional kitchen with updated appliances, quality materials, and appealing design features can enhance the overall appeal of a home and potentially lead to a higher selling price and a faster sale.
Whether you need a permit to renovate your kitchen depends on the specific scope of work involved in the renovation and the regulations of your local building department or permitting office. In general, if your kitchen renovation involves structural changes, electrical work, plumbing alterations, or other major modifications, you will likely need permits.
Here are some common scenarios where you may need permits for a kitchen renovation:
Structural Changes: If you’re making alterations to the layout of the kitchen, such as removing or adding walls, doorways, or windows, you will likely need permits.
Electrical Work: Installing new electrical wiring, outlets, lighting fixtures, or appliances typically requires permits to ensure compliance with electrical codes and safety standards.
Plumbing Work: If your renovation involves installing or relocating plumbing fixtures, such as sinks, faucets, or dishwashers, permits are usually required.
HVAC Modifications: If your renovation includes changes to heating, ventilation, or air conditioning systems, such as installing ventilation hoods or ductwork, permits may be necessary.
Structural Changes: If your renovation involves structural changes to load-bearing walls or other structural elements of the kitchen, permits are typically required to ensure compliance with building codes and structural safety standards.
It’s important to check with your local building department or permitting office to determine the specific permit requirements for your kitchen renovation project. Failing to obtain necessary permits can result in fines, delays, and complications during the renovation process. Additionally, permits help ensure that your renovation meets safety and building code requirements, protecting your investment and the well-being of occupants.
The duration of a kitchen renovation project depends the scope of work, the size of the kitchen, the complexity of the renovations, and the availability of materials and labor. On average, a kitchen renovation project can take anywhere from several weeks to a few months to complete.
Minor Cosmetic Updates: For minor cosmetic updates or partial renovations, such as replacing countertops, cabinets, or flooring, the project might take around 4 to 6 weeks to finish.
Extensive Renovations: Renovations involving structural changes, electrical or plumbing work, and custom cabinetry or countertops can take longer—typically around 8 to 12 weeks or more.
To speed up your home renovation project, it’s important for both homeowner and general contractor to have a clear understanding of the overall design configuration and materials needed. We highly recommend researching kitchen inspiration in advance and pre-selecting any materials and fixtures. You may want to ask yourself:
Is it time for new cabinets, or can they be refreshed with paint and hardware?
Should I replace my kitchen appliances with energy efficient appliances?
For the countertops, do I like granite, quartz, marble, or a butchers block?
Do I prefer wood flooring, tiles, or laminate?
Do I want a tile backsplash?
Do I want open shelves?
Do I have a paint color in mind for the walls?
Whether you need a general contractor for kitchen renovations depends on various factors, including the scope of the renovation, your level of expertise, and your availability to oversee the project. Here are some considerations to help you decide:
Scope of Work: If your kitchen remodel project involves simple cosmetic updates like painting, replacing fixtures, or updating hardware, you may be able to handle the project yourself or hire individual subcontractors for specific tasks like electrical or plumbing work.
Complexity of the Project: For more extensive home renovation projects that involve structural changes, electrical or plumbing modifications, or significant upgrades requiring multiple trades, hiring a general contractor can ensure that the project is properly planned, coordinated, and executed to meet building codes and safety standards.
Time and Expertise: Managing major remodels can be time-consuming and requires knowledge of construction techniques, materials, and local building codes. If you have limited time or lack experience in remodeling, hiring a general contractor can save you time and ensure that the project is completed efficiently and to a high standard of quality.
Coordination of Trades: A general contractor typically oversees and coordinates all aspects of the remodeling project, including hiring and scheduling subcontractors, obtaining permits, ordering materials, and managing the timeline and budget. This can streamline the process and minimize potential delays and complications.
Peace of Mind: Hiring a reputable general contractor can provide peace of mind knowing that experienced professionals are handling the project, addressing any issues that arise, and ensuring that the work is completed to your satisfaction.
Ultimately, the decision to hire a general contractor for your kitchen remodel project depends on your preferences, budget, and the specific requirements of your project. If you’re unsure, consider consulting with Caron Home Remodeling to discuss your project goals and the best approach for your needs.
Homeowners should consider hiring a general contractor for your kitchen remodel to ensure efficient project management, adherence to building codes, and high-quality workmanship.
General contractors oversee the entire process, from planning and scheduling to coordinating subcontractors and handling permits, minimizing stress and potential delays. Their expertise in construction techniques, materials, and local regulations ensures the renovation meets safety standards and achieves the desired outcome.
Additionally, general contractors leverage their industry connections to source materials and labor cost-effectively, potentially saving homeowners time and money while delivering a professionally executed kitchen remodel.
